How often should I be needing to align my rear tyre?

Kinja'd!!!

I had it aligned less than a month ago and it’s wobbly again, I’m a 220lb rider, it’s a 29” wheel, and it’s daily ridden through the city, if that effects how often I align it, I’d need to ask myself if I need to invest in an alignment tool or on a rim that doesn’t pull this crap so often

Dodge for your time

shouldn’t have to align it until you hit a huge pothole and bend the wheel or carry too much weight that the wheel is again bent.

So do you hit potholes? If so, don’t.

Do you believe the wheel you have is too flimsy to carry your weight? If so, get different wheel.

I ride my mountain bike about 2-3 times a week on really rough trails. I have never had my wheels trued. I think you have a weak or poorly built wheel. See if you can get one built that is more suitable for your weight and ridding style. I’d go with a Deore or Shimano XT 6 bolt hub, 14 gauge spokes. brass nipples and a 25 mm-30 mm wide rim by a good named brand like DT swiss, mavic, WTB. If you were in the states you could order one from Performance for around $200-$300.

Roads here are constant potholes, so I’m guessing its my weight/aggressive riding

Any rim recomendations?

I went years without my 700c wheels going out of true, but after my second ride of this season my rear needs attention. Making contact with the left pad on every revolution.

Lost a chainring bolt too... Front pads are shot. Could probably use new cables...

Gotta drop it for service, but my wife shoots me down 99.9% of the time when I suggest going for a ride. Always an ache. I’m wondering if I should even bother fixing it or save the money and just leave it on the porch to rust.

I would consult a local cycle shop. I also believe the beefier the tire the better it is at absorbing abuse.

Good luck

if your frame allows it switching to 2.2 tires and running them a little soft could help... lotsa bounce in those tires

Funnily enough, the brakes are working fine, the issue doesn’t seem to be the hub, the spokes seem to be...

Its an off road bike... it has thick tyres. Very heavy!

I guess I’ll save up and get a better rim, seems to be the consensus amongst the cyclist oppos

Thanks!

I’m on rim brakes, not discs. Discs don’t mind if your wheels are true or not, comparatively speaking.

2.2 is a bit wider than standard... but tbh it does sound like you just have a weak wheel

I only ride my bike on roads, but I true the wheel (just using the brakes as a guide) probably once or twice a season. If I see things wobbling I go in and fix it, but it is not common. I have now broken three spokes on my rear wheel, it’s always a surprise to go to true it, be moving along the edge, and then suddenly there’s no nipple because with the spoke broken, it can fall into the wheel.

Fwiw, from the banter on bikeforums, many shop employees are not very good when it comes to building/truing wheels. Many will do it, very few will do it well.

Assuming you’re not running a low spoke count lightweight wheel, I don’t believe you should be having issues keeping a 29er wheelset straight just bombing around town.

I you have any kind of cycling enthusiast community in your area, ask around and find a specific shop employee (or enthusiast themselves) who knows what they’re doing and have them get you straightened out.

I’m pretty hard on rear wheels. After turning my third rim into a taco, I had the local shop build up a Deep-V rim for me. It’s a bit heavier, but in many years of riding, it still rolls true.
